I think we drove stakes into the ground even though it was attached to the H. When we had the 10-20 we used a free standing saw. I still have 3 chainsaws and do not use them very much anymore. Should had them when I was kid. One of my co-worker's and I made a log splitter and we would tow it into the woods and split all the large pieces. Sure made short work of splitting.
If it couldn't split it, it would shear it off,
