If you're going to rebuild a tractor transmission, you couldn't pick an easier one than an H. It's still a pretty big job, but you don't need any special equipment, just a good set of tools and, to lift the cover, two strong backs.
I recommend having both the IH Blue Ribbon Serviceman's Guide (Manual No.8) and the I&T IH Shop Manual (IH-8). They both cover it well, but for me, having two different explanations for each step was a big help.
