Well it could be somrthing as simpal as the as i call them the cub cadet tierod end on the shifter or just woren linkage or it could be more seirous as i can not see the tractor for myself , i know thes tractors inside and out and i have fixed may of shifting problems on them 90 % of the shifting problems start from clutch adjustment problems . When everything is correct on and 06 they will shift with two fingers . Pull the cowel off and look at the linkage on top and see if there is any movement that should not be there everything should be reasonably tight, no loose nuts no ware on the headed pins down below and no wobble on the shifter shaft that goesinto the top of the range transmission . IF ya got rev. then i would have to say that the shifter may not be set correctly or if that is not the case then it may be seirous and get into the pocketbook. Now if you bought the tractor as to being good then i would say something to the seller that it is not so good and if you bought it from a dealer then i would make him stand behind it and hold him to it . Most of the problems with the 06 seires in the shifting department is not being able to find reverse . I do not know where you are from but if you were reasonably close to me i would be glade to take a look. I and in Norht east Ohio.
