By a 12 volt ignition do you mean the coil? A 12 volt coil will run on a 6 volt system it may not be as efficient. Most 12 volt systems have a resister wire or block to lower the coil voltage to help the points last longer when the manufactures switched to 12 volt systems. I put a 12 volt coil on my Super C when the 6 volt quit and could not tell any differnce. If you are running a 12 volt battery it won't charge up fully with a 6 volt generator however I think IHC made some 12 volt generators that looked like 6. If you are worried take it in and have it tested.
