8 feet is quite a bit for a 404. Your tractor should have a tach. A rule of thumb for any operation, pto related or not, is that the engine rpm, loaded at full throttle, should not drop below the pto speed marked on the tach. Or, the engine rpm should not drop below the rated full load rpm -- I don't have that number handy. Another test is to depress the clutch to stop movement, then release the clutch -- the rpm should rise to the rated rpm in about 5 seconds, or less. Any more than that and the engine will probably be straining to make rpm. If it doesn't pass the test, reduce your swath width.
