As far as 6 or 12 volt depends on what you want to do. If your goal is to retain originality, then 6-volt is the way to go. I have found 12-volt systems to be more forgiving than 6-volts for needing starting circuits in perfect condition. If you want to add a radio, additional lights or other electrical accessories I believe you will find 12 volts will be more practical. If you stay with 12-volts you will need either a 12 volt coil or a 6-volt coil and a ballast resistor wired in the power line between the switch and the coil. When I do my conversions to 12 volts I always find a way to wire them for 12 volt start/6-volt run. I do this by running a wire from the coil side of the resistor to either a 12-volt tap on switch on the starter (I buy a special switch for the rod pulls like on a C) or from the starter side of the push down switch on the M, or from the 12-volt tap when I do a remote solenoid instead of the push down switch on the M. I have found this to make for a much easier cold weather start. My nickel’s worth.
