What you are describing could be two separate issues. The starter could be a bad switch on the starter and the dying could be from a coil or condenser that is going bad. The first thing I�d do is replace the condenser and take a look at the starting switch. A lot of times the contacts in the switch get pitted or �burned� and won�t make good contact. Now, come to thing about it when you say �push button� could this have a solenoid in the starting circuit? If so that could be going bad and not powering the starter properly. I have also tested starters by hooking up jumper cables directly to the starter from a 12-volt system. If the starter rolls good then, likely it is in the wiring (including switch or solenoid) between the battery and the starter.
