One way to check your starter button is to use a jump cable and bypass the button. Just fix one end of the cable to the battery and hit the starter terminal with the other. If there is a difference in the performance then you might replace your button first. I know I have gone through a few over the years. You can always get a starter motor rewound. Its usually cheaper than getting a replacement.
