Tanner, for gears 1 through 4, shifting from a dead stop is best as like Allan says, this is a tractor and there are no syncronizers. When shifting from 4th to 5th (road gear), you can start out in 4th, and shift to 5th if you throttle down as you engage the clutch and drop the gearshift handle into 5th carefully. There is a sweet spot, which I"m sure you having driving experience will find in no time.
