Assuming you are talking about a narrow front with two wheels, if they were straight they would be about a foot or more apart where they touch the ground and 6" outboard of the turning centerline of the steering shaft. That means if one wheel hit a rock there would be a violent feedback to the steering wheel possible ripping it out of your hands. Of course this isn't such a problem with power steering models but that came later. The closer the wheels came together at the ground the better. You'll notice the ones with a single front wheel have it directly over the shaft.
