It sounds a lot like a condenser. They will sometimes fail in a mode where they short when they get hot. Once they've cooled off a little, they seem to work fine again.

One point you made in your message was that you have to "rejump" it to get it started. With a good battery, you can start and run the tractor every day for a week or two without ever charging the battery.

If you start with a hot battery and after ten minutes the battery will not turn the engine you have a serious short to ground in your wiring.
