Yep, when you're diagnosing these things, or anything for that matter, you've got to get to the root cause. Sometimes the obvious problem is the result of a not-so-obvious problem.

You replace or repair that shaft and put the pump back on the tractor without finding out what was REALLY wrong, and you're just going to break it again, or worse, break something else.

There's a 99% chance that the shaft broke because the pump couldn't turn.
