David: 35 years ago I was running 3 kinds of oil in tractors, trucks, car, etc. I had several employees and they kept getting oils mixed up. Since diesel tractors were the main concern on my farm I switched everything to a diesel motor oil. I went with Esso XD3, 30 in summer and 20 in winter. Best move I ever made. Later I switched to still XD3 but changed to 15W-40. Since that time I've always got 300,000 miles out GM V8 gas engines. 10,000 to 13,000 hours on tractor diesels. I don't have exact figures for Farmall gas tractors, really haven't rebuilt one since, but then those old gassers didn't see a lot of hours either. I have a 4 cycle lawn mower IH dealer gave me in 1975, after buying 1066. That mower had mowed close to 1/4 acre per year until last year. Not much original on it but the engine is. I also got 400,000 miles out of one of those mickey mouse 6.2 Chevy diesels. I would stay with the top of line diesel motor oils. You just don't need to pay that much for it. I'm buying mine for about $2.50 CAD per litre, a shade more than your quart. Remember the $2.50 CAD will equal about $2.00 USD. Best maintainence I know of. Sure you can use cheaper oil, but what are the costs of engine rebuilds.

A Farmall Story - by Ed Meadors. The year was 1978. Our young family had recently moved to rural Chesapeake, Virginia to a plot of land which would finally allow us to realize our dreams of a huge garden, critters and more lawn and pasture than we would ever use! We needed a TRACTOR; not a riding mower or tractor wannabe, but a real TRACTOR. The answer to our needs materialized in the form of a '44 Farmall A, complete with cultivators, discs, single plow, a 5ft.Woods belly mower and one, mounted spare 9.00x24 rear wheel.
