You should not be able to miss the timing marks. The little gear has a line on top and the rotor butten has a line on it that you can follow too. I beleve its right behind the tang . mesh em up sounds like you might be 180 off you can change the plug wire 180 to see on the cap if it runs you will know what you have to do.
