Altenator question Farmall H HELP

Hi guys I have a farmall H with what I believe is a GM altenator under the hood. it fits with no cut out or having to unhook the hood. it has a wire for the return charging and then a plug in with two wires.
One of the pigtail wires goes to the charge stud and the other goes to a on off switch then the charge termenal wire goes to the battery directly. OK now this is the problem. If I dont turn the push pull switch on Re: the wire that goes to the plug in on the alt it does not make any difference still charges. But if I leave the wire hooked to the battery it shows a small discharge and runs the bat dead. That wire goes from the bat directly to the stud on the alt.Any Help would be apreatiated.iT DOES CHARGE OK WHEN RUNNING THOUGH
