However from your description it sounds like the battery failed from overcharging.

Once you get a new battery installed watch the ammeter. With a fresh, fully charged battery the ammeter should indicate about 5 amps of charge after the engine's run at governed RPM for a few minutes. However if it continues to indicate a charge great than 10 amps or so, it's time for a new voltage regulator.
