Why not just fix the flow divider valve, since that's almost certainly what's wrong with it? Pulling a hydraulic lever blocks the flow through and causes the pressure to bypass through the power steering motor, causing it to work. I don't know for sure, but I would hazard a guess that running the pump direct through the power steering won't be good for something. The engine lugs a little when you pull the lever, doesn't it? I think you'll have that all the time if you run the power steering directly. It's robbing horsepower that you probably would rather have to pull with, right?
