Two things about alcohol. First, ethanol burns slower than gasoline, thus the need to advance the timing so that the “explosion” occurs at the most efficient time relating to piston location. Second, ethanol has less energy (lower number of BTU’s) than gasoline per unit, the way this can be offset is to raise the compression ratio.
