My personal recommendations: Temps consistently over 55 F, and/or heavy continuous loads at temps over 20F: straight 30 W or 15-40. Temps inconsistent but warmer than 20 F and medium loads or short term heavy loads straight 20 or 10-30. Temps below 20 F and light to medium loads straight 10W or 5-W 30. If your cooling system is working good, lighter oils won’t be a problem, but if your cooling system is working marginally, use heavier oil. If the engine has had a detergent oil in it, keep using detergent oil, but if it hasn’t try to find non-detergent oil or be prepared to change oil and filter as soon as the oil turns dark colored as the detergent oil will start “cleaning up” the engine and the garbage will end up in the oil and filter.
