I split the 686 because of an banging noise just behind the clutch. Found the problem to be that the bolt which holds the PTO drive gear on the shaft loosened to the point the tapered washer came disengaged and the gear went tooth to tooth on the hydraulic pump. Both gears lost teeth. I got the parts and other than spending a bunch of time on bearing races and seals, it is going well. However, I noticed that in the manual, the clutch drive shaft (from clutch plate to the transmision drive) has a hole in it on the rear splines with two balls an a splring. It says to be carefull not to loose them. I was carefull but my shaft doesn't even have a hole in it. I also couldn't find the balls and spring in the parts manual. Am I missing something? Both manuals are IH.
