Sprout, what I would recomend is to make sure you clean an prime all your parts as you are putting the old girl back together. That way you have for the most part a clean tractor per say, even if there is little grease here an there. I myself strip, prime, base coat each part an then after i'm done put the finial coats of paint on. A number of my friends fix everything then strip the tractor back down an paint. It's all in how you want to do it not what everyone else wants :o) Have fun doing it an enjoy your time restoring it, it's a hobby not a job so have fun an good luck.
