Super C ring gear question

I'm starting restoration on a 1952 Super C and I've found the ring gear is really chewed up. I recieved a new ring gear mail order and it doesnt have any bevel on the teeth. Is this normal? I always thought that the teeth on ring gears had to be beveled to allow the starter pinion to engage smoothly. The old ring gear is so badly damaged I cant tell if it originally had bevels so I thought maybe you guys might have some thoughts on this. Thanks in advance for your help.
