The reason why the numbers don't match on the Super C and Super MTA is that they are not supposed to match, even when new. If you look in the front of a parts book from the letter series on, in the "Ordering Parts" section, it will tell you if the engine serial number is supposed to match or not. Some do, some don't. Yes casting codes can be deciphered. May I recommend (plug here) the IH Tractor Data Book? It gives serial numbers, how to read the casting codes, etc.etc. etc. Available from this website and many others.
