If an engine has an oil filter then you want to run detergent because as RAW said the detergent keeps the dirt suspended until it can get trapped by the filter. If an engine does not have a filter then you want a non-detergent oil so that the dirt will fall out of the oil rather than getting carried around thru the engine.
