Paul, the upper part should be a "u" shaped bracket that comprises half of the joint and is welded to the end of the steering shaft. It stays put, the best fix is to replace the spider assembly. I just bought the spider assembly, as it's called in the parts book, from my IH dealer. He had three more on the shelf. It was $10.50. I don't think they have a website but you can call them at 262-763-3563. It's Otter Sales in Burlington, WI. They will ship. Also, the shaft is 7/8" not 3/4".
