It will only work if you have an external resistor between the ignition switch and the coil. The resistor is (usually) a porcelain rectangular block with the wires run to each end. The 'R' terminal would be connected to the end of the resistor that feeds the ignition coil. So when the tractor is running, the voltage to the coil is fed through the resistor; and the voltage is dropped to extend points life. When the starter is engaged, the full battery voltage (although somewhat lowered because the starter pulls the voltage down) is applied from the 'R' terminal, making for easier starting. Many, many vehicles used this system, probably not a lot of tractors. The coil you would use would be designed to be used with a resistor, I believe they were pretty much just a 6V coil.
