Gene - Actually the THIN edge of the shim goes to the front. This effectively moves the front wheels ahead and closer in line with the pivot shaft and makes the tractor easier to steer. Punch below for a photo of the wedge that was installed on my SH. (Note that "FRONT" is prominently cast right into the thin edge of the part...) As the others have noted presence/absence of the wedge has little to do with steering slop. If the tractor has worn bushings, gears, etc. the wheels will shimmy with and without the wedge.
