Fully charge the battery up then let it set for an hour or so. Hook your voltmeter to the battery - check the battery voltage. With the voltmeter still connected crank the engine. Check the battery voltage while cranking. You are checking the voltage drop. For a fully charged 6 volt battery (6 to 7 volts), if the voltage drops to around 5 volts or lower during cranking you are due for a battery.
