My experience with this problem is that the 4th and 5th sliding gear is worn out. You don't have to split the tractor to replace but, you do have to pull out hydralic pump,gas tank and transmission cover plate. You must disconnect the drive shaft and take the end off the upper set of gears that sticks out of the trans. The upper set will unbolt and can be lifted out by pulling them backwards out of the trans. You must replace the bearing on the end of the shaft and the sliding gear. I would also check those things mentioned in the previous post.
