Dan, as far as I know, the crank is not threaded. I've heard of folks boiling things in oil to expand them just enough to make it easier to get thigs together. In fact, we in the printing business routinely boil bearings to get them on rollers. I've personally never done it but someday I might if I encounter a tough one.
