If you have the third adjustable brush on your gen you can set it so it will charge a lower amount. If you are running a magneto your system only needs an amp or so as thereis no current drain when tractor is running. I have 6 tractors with cutouts and mags and they just work fine also some with regulators and also dists. When replacing a cutout with a regulator make sure the reg is a match for your gen. If you look at the parts info you will see there are different ones listed.
