ONE POSSIBILITY: IN THE EARLY 1900'S IHC BOUGHT LARGE TRACKS OF LAND IN EASTERN KY FOR ITS RICH COAL SEAMS. BENHAM KY WAS A COMPANY TOWN OWNED BY IHC UNTIL 1960. AS THE COMPANY OWNED THE STORE, THE MEAT MARKET, THE FURNITURE STORE ETC. CHITS OR TOKENS WERE USED IN PLACE OF DOLLARS. THERE IS A NICE MUSEUM THERE NOW.
