I'm going to throw some more ideas in the hat. I'm not sure that they were too worried about compaction when they first started making tractors. I'm going to say that it was easier to see down, you have much more crop clearance (remember, the horse it replaced could walk down the rows), and, it is MUCH easier to mount a cultivator. They do tend to fall over more, but not that much more. They also have less up keep and are easier to make. Just put some wheels on the post and you are set. Much better than drag links, spindles, pivots, etc. And, if you look at the early advertizing, when you planted in check rows and cultivated, if you turned just so, you didn't run over a single plant. Much harder to do with a wide front. It was more utility than anything, I'd say. Wide fronts are more popular these days due people being led to believe that they are safer. That may be, but the machine in the seat is what makes a tractor safe. Aaron
