Narrow fronts are popular on "row crop" tractors for several reasons. As mentioned, compaction is a factor. But also when corn is over knee high and you are trying to cultivate for the last time (or "lay-by" to hill it out) a wide front with its lower clearance will snap the stalks clean off. Also you can't very easily mount a cornpicker on a tractor wide wide front. Wide fronts are more stable on uneven ground due to the rocker effect of the main beam. John Deere (amd maybe others...I don't know) had a "roll-a-matic" narrow front that allowed each of two front wheels to roll up/down in opposition to smooth out the ride. Wide fronts are MUCH more stable on hillsides as they effectively spread the stance out over a wider area, like the Pontiac commercial "wider is better" for sloping ground. Narrow fronts are also less stable (side to side) for loader use. A narrow front won't work very well working to level and pack haylage or corn sillage. It's more a matter of what you intend to use the tractor for that determines what type of front end is best for that application.

He owned a small sawmill for sawing "baccer" sticks. The Super A was the powerplant. When I was old enough (7 or 8), I would get up early and be dressed to
