The lead lubricates the valve train and keeps the metal from pull off the valve seats and sticking to the valves. If you have your motor rebuilt have hardened valve seats put in and never worry about it agin, in the meantime do whatever you wish, the worst that will happen is sticking a valve or ruining your seats(a stuck valve on an overhead valve engine can mean catastraphe) are you a betting man!!
