That's pretty strange. Wonder how that rag-like stuff got in there. That engine should have regular old solid lifters. One thing that comes to mind- you didn't happen to use any parts from the older engines in that family, like the one in the Farmall H, did you? I'm no expert on H's, but it seems to me that some of the valve train parts were longer or shorter depending on which cylinder head it had.
