WHEN I WAS YOUNG-16-18 ALL WE COULD AFFORD WERE OLD CARS($200-$300) AND THEY WERE ALL 6V.HAD TROUBLE STARTING THEM.I USED AN 8V BATTERY (HAD TO ADJUST REGULATOR THOUGH).ALSO USED 12V AND TAPPED CENTER OF 12V FOR SIX V LIGHTS ETC.HAD TO TURN ON HEATER BEFORE TURNING ON HEADLIGHTS,OR THEY WOULD SOON BURN OUT.THEY HAD A 6/12V BATT. CALLED A CHANGE-OVER BATTERY.IT HAD A SOLENOID MOUNTED ON THE BATTERY FOR 12V STARTING THEN IT WOULD SWITCH OVER TO 6V.IT WOULD CHARGE BOTH SIDES OF 12V TOO.AT THE TIME(1960's)IT WAS EXPENSIVE,ABOUT $75(THAT'S A LOT WHEN THE CAR COST $200).I HAVEN'T HEARD OF THEM UNTIL YOU POSTED YOUR MSG.GOOD LUCK.
