I've never heard of a 6-12 volt battery. For years, farmers bought 8 volt batteries for their Farmalls. I tried to buy one of those and the youngsters at the parts counter thought I was one card short of a deck for asking for one. Apparently there isn't a lot of demand for 8 volt batteries any more, so its back to 6 volts again, just like we started out originally. The old days of center-tapping a battery are over too. There is no longer any heavy, lead strap inside the top cover... the new batteries are made out of plastic and very little of anything else, so there isn't anything to tap into, without ruining the battery. There seem to be a lot of "common" things that are not available any more... have you tried to buy any tar lately? (not talking about fiber roof cement... just plain ol tar) Turpentine was another situation. I finally found some of that, but it was so expensive, I chose not to buy any after I found it. Stick to the 6 volt system. It worked well through many decades of use and changing to 12 volts will just butcher up a good old tractor.

The need for fabricating becomes obvious when you go to buy any of these
