Another method is to use your meter and find battery voltage with the engine stopped. In order to charge the battery, generator output voltage must exceed battery voltage. Now, with the engine running, put your meter across the terminals on the generator. If the generator voltage is greater than battery voltage, then your generator should be charging the battery. If you have an ammeter in the circuit, the meter should show charge. If you have no way to tell whether or not there is any charging current, pull the cover off of the voltage regulator. The relay that sends current to the battery should be shut. If it is not, there is either a problem with the regulator or the wiring.
