Lance: If it's working well don't touch it. When the generator packs it in then definately I'd go with an alternator. At that point the old generator could cost $150. for rebuild. Most guys around here with 6 cylinder diesels are going to auto wreckers picking up a GM delco for $25. On the first one you will need to fabricate a mount for alternator. Ocasionally you will find new alternators at auto parts stores for $40. So it's all about money when the time comes. The alternator will give much better service especially if you are using a lot of lighting. Personally I would go with 2 wire, I use an excite switch and problems are nil. I know little about the 1 wire systems, other than the growling I hear about them.
