The oil pressure relief valve may popped open for for some unknown reason letting the oil bypass.
They say it's located just below the base for the mag or distributor. Heavy gummy deposits from the oil could have cause this.

It happened on one of my former co-workers car.
He only ran the car short distances and we think
that caused it. He was lucky when the red lite came on he was in his driveway and we pushed the car into his garage and dropped the oil pan the next day. Put a new oil pump on it even though
the old pump was ok after soaking in parts cleaner. Hal
