Spud, if you remove the steering shaft with worm gear you will probably find the answer to the problem. There is no "adjustment" to these worm shaft and gear but I'll bet it was let go empty of gear lube and the worm is worn like mine was on my 340D. The worm was worn down so sharp I could've shaved with it. Get your wallet fattened up when you find a new one.
