EZ - the 154 & 185 numbered lo-boys were equipped with starter / generators rather than a standard starter. So what he is dealing with is a stock set-up. They went back to ring gear starters on the 184 lo-boy. I don't believe he has modified anything. He is dealing with the inherent weakness of the starter / generator system.
