Just pulled the bearing retainers off mine last week. One side came off very easy, the other side did the same as yours. I carefully drove the bearing and carrier out of the retainer with a brass drift. I had to knock it out a bit & then pull the carrier away from the housing and blocked it away with 3 evenly spaced nuts and then drove it all the way out. Didn't need too much force.
