confused about ignition switch wire

I just installed a new wiring harness on my 46 A, but it didn't
come with a wire to run from the ammeter to the ignition switch.
I guess I will make my own, but I have several questions. What
size wire, 14 gauge? Am I right in that it connects to the + side
of the ammeter? If I want to cover the wire with cloth, is this
something that be found locally, or will I need to order it?
