Before you take apart the carb try this.

Remove the carb, fill the bowl with something like Berryman's carb dip from your local auto parts store. Leave it in the carb no more than 15-20 min, drain and flush with fresh gasoline until no more dip is present.

Or you can dip the whole carb into the can, just don't leave it too long.

The problem with spray carb cleaner is that it dissolves the gum for a few minutes until the cleaner evaporates then you are back with the gum still there.
