H Steering shafts

I thought I had a lot of play in the steering shaft of my restoration project H.I replaced the bushing and seal at the front of the worm shaft.
But there is a significant amount of play where the worm shaft passes through the "center bearing". My worm shaft shows a lot of wear where it rotates in this part. But the center bearing is NOT a bearing it is just a cast piece. No bushing, no seal, no bearing. The shaft is worn a lot on the bottom side from turning in this support. If you grab the shaft and pull it back and forth there is a LOT of play there.
Now do I weld up the shaft to replace the worn metal, bush the "bearing" piece, or just allow all that play in the center support "bearing"?
