starter is smoking on my M

I installed a new battery on my Farmall M then when I tried to start my M which has not been started in a long time, the starter started to smoke. The engine would not turn over, it would bump but not turn over. I initially hooked the ground to the negative terminal on the battery, Thinking I put it in backwards I reversed and it did the same thing only this time it smoked from the regulator (I think it�s the regulator) it�s the black box located by the ignition switch. My two questions are where does chassis ground hook too on the battery, positive or negative? If my engine was locked up would it make the starter smoke? Thanks, hope someone knows the answer�.
