The 5488 was intercooled and if I remember right it had a bosch model mw inline pump instead of the trusty ambac 100. Same engine, rear axles, drive train basically. I guess that is why 5488's had a higher trans. failure rate than 5288's. The front axle was just a option. Have seen both. No doubt the square axle is stronger. If I was looking for one I would do alot of checking on if the transmission has been updated or if it was late enough that it came that way from the factory. Most of the ones around here were good reliable tractors for the guys that had them. The transmission failures left a bad taste but in reality they were better than the tractors they replaced.
