Dave: If you need ether above freezing, you have something not in very good shape, and will probably let you down in the near future. From your description I suspect pump and injectors rather than pistons and sleeves. Although without knowing compression, one cant be sure. That 544 should be starting without any aids in temps as low as 15F. Requiring ether above freezing is not good news. Been there and done that.
